'll tell us how the administration is about to go with a prominent republican. let's begin with brianna keilar live in washington. congress is back in session for the big midterm election push and they've got a very big issue on their hands in the matter of whether or not to extend these bush tax cuts. this is -- this is going to be an interesting one to watch in the next couple of days. >> and this is the big issue, jim. this is the issue that in really less than four weeks because they're out of there again. they're out of washington again ahead of the election season, this is what they're going to be dealing with. and obviously, the issue that continues to resinate is republican leader john boehner who had said that he would go along with extending the tax cuts for everyone except for the wealthiest earns, which, of course, is what president obama has gone for. but it's created a jumbled message among republicans. because look at what some other republicans are saying. you have mitch mcconnell who is saying, no, i'm pushing legislation to keep these tax cuts in place across the board

freedom, and at least 12 of these nations are allowing open service and are currently fighting alongside u.s. troops in afghanistan. there's a cost involved in our current policy. according to a 2005 g.a.o. report, american taxpayers spend more than $30 million each year to train replacement for gay troops discharged under the don't ask, don't policy. the total costs reported since the statute was implemented, according to g.a.o., has been nearly $200 million and that doesn't count the administrative and legal costs associated with investigations and hearings. the military schooling of gay troops, such as pilot training and linguist training. we are losing highly-skilled troops to this policy. according to the g.a.o., 8% of the service members let go under don't ask, don't tell held critical occupations defined as services such as interpreters, 3% had skills in an important foreign language such as arabic, farsi or korean. more than 13,000 troops have been dismissed from the military simply because of their sexual orientation since president clton signed this law in 1993. mr. president, soci

are watching us around the country on wgn america. wgn's judy wang is live in roseland with our top story. >> good afternoon. michael pierce's family says that they had a shotgun in the house for protection. they purchased it legally and had it locked up. the boys found the key. pierce's 14-year-old brother remains in custody. >> we were going to miss michael. michael was blessing to us for 12 years. we don't know how we will make it without him. >> reporter: michael pierce's family adopted him when he was four months old. his mother found him in the family's home on east 130 place last night. the 12-year-old was lying at bottom of the basement stairs with gunshot wounds to his head. pierce was pronounced dead about half hour after he was found. investigators say the evidence suggests this shooting was an accident. no charges have been filed. >> it had to be because they were like twins. they was -- when you saw one, you saw the other. they ran, played back and forth, up and down the block with rollers. whether those roller skates -- just fun kids. >> saw them last week sitting on the por

and the tea part easier have been using against them. that means going negative. it means brutally honest, devastatingly negative ads. as one strategist put it, anyone who spends money on a positive ad may as well get give money to charity. the democrats are finally getting tough. and that's our top story tonight. >>> plus, what scares you? what's to fear if the republicans grab control of the congress? a push to starve the health care bill? another government shutdown in order to shift spending power to the congress? a relentless campaign to take down president obama. listen tonight to what the republicans themselves are offering up. >> also, we got a glimmer of good economic news this morning. the jobless rate ticked up a tenth of a point to 9.6%. 9.6. and 54,000 jobs were lost overall because of the temporary census bureau jobs coming to an end. but the private sector added 67,000 new jobs, higher than expected. that offers hope that things are getting better in the real economic world out there. still some democrats are quite worried about ending bush tax cuts for even the top bracket
